TUNA & SHARK TRIP
WE HAD AN UNBELIEVEABLE DAY ON THE WATER.  BROUGHT A 40+ POUND BLUE FIN TUNA BACK TO THE DOCK, AS WELL AS A MAKO PUP THAT WE PLAYED WITH FOR A WHILE THEN RELEASED.  Sometimes you are in the right place at the right time...thanks to our First Mate Jason Sousa, and crew - Richard Inglis & friends.  Great job guys!!!

Sunday July 18

Big Boy Sport Fishing Charters doubled down - our morning crew boarded at 7:00 AM and headed off to the Island. Katilynn Silva and friends spent four hours fishing, and nearly limited out - the Bass were all keepers, fat and heavy. Good job guys!

At 1:00 PM Mike and Karen Stearns and crew left the dock from more Bassing at the Island. Water and wind had picked up, but the fish were still there biting, and the trip was certainly a success.

Many thanks to our Mates and Customers who made this past week an incredible success.

Saturday July 17

First Mate Jason Sousa, Captain Duane Sousa, and Christopher Bencivengo headed off the dock at 5:00 AM for a 10 hour day of Shark and Tuna fishing. It was a little bumpy in the AM but water flattened out soon, and not long after the slick was set, and chum was being dumped big Blue "Dogs" were chasing the boat. After all was said and done, the crew brought four huge Blue Sharks to the back of the boat - over ten feet long and weighing over 300 pounds each. What an awesome day.

Friday July 16

Brian Ellison and friends from North Carolina booked Big Boy II for a day of Bass fishing off the Island - the water was mostly calm, and little wind - First Mate Zach Harvey helped them fill the cockpit with fat keeper Stripers. Job well done!

Thursday July 15

Joseph Allen and family - left the dock for a day of Striper and Blues fishing. The weather turned somewhat uncooperative later in the afternoon, but the crew fished them up anyway. Thanks guys for a great day.

Tuesday July 13

John Wadlegger, Jr. and friends, a great bunch of guys, left the dock at 6:00 AM and headed for Block Island for a full day of Striper fishing. They fished hard all day, trolling some line as well as jigging around the Island, and their efforts paid off. The crew went home with plenty of keeper Striper filets.

Monday July 12

Margaret Pankhurst and crew from Texas boarded the Big Boy II and headed for a full day of Bass & Blues off Block Island. First Mate Jason Sousa helped them with the art of jigging and limited out by the end of the day bringing home beautiful keeper Stripers - big fat fish.

Friday - July 9

Brett Young and crew left the dock at 6:00 AM for a full day of Bass and Blues. The weather got a little bumpy in the early afternoon, but the fish cooperated and they limited out, going home with some great striper filets. Good job Guys!

Thursday - July 8

Thomas Rosedale and crew spent an afternoon aboard the Big Boy II and did a great job bringing keeper striper - one after the other - to the boat. Tuesday - July 6

Captain Duane Sousa and First Mate Gary Briere headed off the dock at 5:00 AM with Armand Armenia and his wife, and Chris Schultz for an offshore trip looking for shark and Tuna. The weather could not have been more beautiful, flat calm water, and it wasn't long before big Blue Sharks were following the chum - the crew wrestled with a couple of 250 pounders, saw whales, and had an incredible day on the water.

Sunday June 27, 2010 -

Captain Duane Sousa, Jr. and First Mate Jason Sousa pulled off the dock at 7:00 AM with a full crew doing a two boat charter with Capt Denny Dillon on the Persuader II.  Weather was not completely cooperative, rainy and very foggy in the morning, and the guys aboard Big Boy II worked hard for their fish - some nice keeper Stripers, and some through backs too.

Saturday June 26, 2010 -
2010 Annual Bass Tournament
Big Boy II left Galilee at 4:00 AM and headed to the Block in search of monster Bass in hopes of winning the 2010 Bass Tournament.  The crew consisted of Capt. Duane Sousa, Jr., Jason Sousa, Gary Briere, Stephanie Harvey, Kyle Birkenfeld and Jay Mahoney.  It was an incredible day on the water, and the crew pulled out all the stops - trolling wire line, jigging, eeling and filled the cockpit with beautiful keeper bass, the biggest one over 33 pounds.  Big Boy Sport Fishing did not win the tournament, but enjoyed every minute out on the open water.  Great job guys - we'll try again next year!

SUNDAY JUNE 20, 2010

Mike Nicoletti and crew headed off the dock with First Mate Jason Sousa at 6:00 AM and headed to the North Rip for a full day of Striper fishing. The catch was incredible - hauling up three big bass at a time on an umbrella rig. Weather cooperated, only having to troll around 1 and a half knots, winds kicking up later in the day. The crew got a good workout, and we look forward to fishing with them again soon.

SATURDAY JUNE 19, 2010

John Tranghese and crew got aboard with First Mate Jason Sousa and headed to Block Island for a day of Striper and Blue Fishing. They jigged and trolled wire line, put some great keeper Striper in the boat, some Blues that went back in the water for another day of swimming, and Tuna were spotted busting off the Southwest Ledge. They worked a little for the fish, but it was well worth it. Thanks for a great day guys!

June 9, 2010

Our Dock Master, Ray Pena and his crew got aboard Big Boy II at 6:00 AM, along with Mike Comerford, First Mate, and headed off to fish off Block Island for an eight hour Bass and Blues day.  It truly was a "Bluebird" day - they hammered the fish and limited out, bringing in Stripers at least 39 inches.  They all did a great job, and we look forward to fishing with them again soon!

June 7, 2010

Ray Monteiro boarded Big Boy II at 7:00 AM and headed for Flounder off the beach.  The fishing was outstanding - First Mate Jason Sousa and Ray Monteiro brought up  several mediums and a lot more larges - the bite was great, the water calm and wind cooperative for a great drift.  They also pulled in some good keeper Black Sea Bass.  Thanks Ray for a great day!

JUNE 1, 2010

Josh Rebman  joined us for a half day of inshore Flounder fishing.  We fished off the beach from 7:00 AM until about 11:00 AM and had an awesome time bringing beautiful keeper Flounder to the boat - they are here and already "Jumbo" size.  Everyone went home with bags of filets, and look forward to fishing with Josh again soon.

MAY 31, 2010
Greg and Jeff Miner and crew left Galilee at 6:00 AM and headed to Block Island looking for Bass and Blues.  Weather cooperated - seas were 2 to 3 feet, and winds were 5 to 10 knots - a beautiful day on the water.  The crew and First Mate, Gary Briere worked the rods for several hoursw, and the crew only took the number of fish they could eat - Stripers came on board upwards of 39".  They were back at the dock by 2:00 PM - great job guys - we look forward to fishing with you again soon!!

2009 SEASON WRAP UP IN RHODE ISLAND

Big Boy II Sport Fishing Charters had an incredible summer of fishing, more than we could have possibly expected, and we know that we didn't accomplish this alone!!!  None of what we do would be possible without our faithful customers and friends - some of who fished with us for the first time this summer, some who traveled from half way across the country to see us, and our faithful friends who return every year to fish our waters of Rhode Island Sound.  Many thanks to each and everyone of you who board the Big Boy II and made our summer the success that it was!!!  We look forward to seeing you soon - whether in Southwest Florida this winter or back in Rhode Island next spring.

We would also like to give a special thanks to our Mates, Mike Comerford, John Ogozalek, Gary Brierre and Norm Bardell.  They made each fishing trip special for our crews, and brought some incredible fish to the boat this summer, while at the same time freely sharing their years of experience along with their love of the water to each person who boarded the Big Boy II.

A very heartfelt thank you must be given to our "brothers" - Gary "the Sponge" Brierre, Jay "Bird" Mahoney, and Kyle Birkenfeld, all of whom affectionately refer to the Captain as the "Professor".  They boarded the boat early this spring, diesel tools in hand, and carefully rebuilt the Starboard engine - getting her to run better than she ever has before.  This they did after they had worked all day turning wrenches, and before they would go home to their familes.  They would show up at the boat and work for hours - sometimes late into the night so that we could meet our charter deadlines.  They have become as close to us as any family member could be, they taught us lessons this summer that we thought were too late to learn, they always have the Captain's back, and we will be forever grateful for all their hard work, friendship, love and loyalty.

CAPTAIN WILLIAM DUANE SOUSA, JR.

THE 2009 SEASON STARTS OFF WITH A BANG!!!!!

Big Boy Sport Fishing Charters had a full week of quality fishing.  Monday June 15th we were out with Rich Clark and friends for Bass and Blues off Block Island.  We limited out by 9:45, bringing quality keepers to the boat.

On June 16, Paul Perrucci and friends spent the day with us, again fishing up Bass and and an occasional Blue.  Weather was a little bumpy, but that didn't stop the crew from limiting out early and we all had a great time and look forward to fishing with them again soon.

We fished a twilight trip with our long time friend Louie Figueroa on Wednesday evening, June 17.  We left the dock at 3:00 PM and had an awesome evening, bringing in Bass that were over 44" long!  What a great trip.

We fished half a day Thursday, June 18 with Jonathan Flanders and buddies - weather did not cooperate at all, but we managed to bring keeper Bass to the boat.

The Moonlight Madness Bass Tournament began on Friday, June 19 at 6:00 PM and continued through Sunday, June 21.  Our Team - Captain Duane Sousa, Jr., Gary Brierre, Jay Mahoney and Kyle Birkenfeld fished them hard, and brought some quality fish in; unfortunately not large enough to weigh in at the end of the Tournament.  "A" for effort guys!!  We spent the last part of Saturday off the beach getting some good size Black Sea Bass, Scup and Flounder.

Let's Go Fishing!!!

Sunday, June 28, 2009 - SHARK FISHING

Big Boy II left the dock at 5:00 AM with a full crew, a cooler full of Mackeral and started trolling for Blues around the Island for chunking, then headed for the 40 fathom line looking for sharks.  We hooked up 3 Blue Sharks - at least 150 pounds each, while 6 more were at the back of the boat.  Weather cooperated all day, and there were plenty of whales with their calfs everywhere.  We finished off the day back at the Island, limiting out on Stripers.  We had a great day with Dan Palladino and his friends and look forward to fishing with them again soon.

Captain Duane Sousa, Jr.

July 17, 2009

Big Boy II headed to Block Island for a Twilight Trip at 3:00 PM.  We had live eels and chunk bait on board to start off with, and did this for a couple of hours.  The Striper were there at the Rip, but not interested in either one.  We pulled out the umbrella rigs and trolled for a while, bringing some keeper bass to the boat.  The bite was slow, and around 7:30 the crew decided to make one more run at Captain Sousa's urging, and then call it a day.  Without warning the port pole was hit like a freight train, bending the rod all the way to the gunnel, and a fight followed between fish and fisherman to bring whatever had hit the rig to the boat.  The pictures we have posted do not do this "monster" justice - over 48" long, and 50 pounds or better.

LET'S GO FISHING!!!!!!!!!!

Captain W. Duane Sousa, Jr.

July 25, 2009
Saturday July 25, 2009 was a relaxing day on the water aboard the Big Boy II with Jake and Terrie Jacklin, Pete and Geri Cifaldi, and Captain Duane Sousa and Elizabeth.  We had no agenda for the day except to enjoy each others company and spend a great day on the water with friends.  We headed off the dock late - around 8:00 AM to look for some Stripers and Blues; spent about 3 hours catching keepers, and then started fishing for "Doormat" Flounder, big Black Sea Bass, and Scup that weighed in at a little over 3 pounds.  The ladies had the lucky rods, and outfished the guys hands down.  We took a ride into Old Harbour, had a late lunch, then started back for the dock around 3:00 PM, while Jake Jacklin cleaned and filted a box full of fish all the way back to Galilee.  It was just one of those days that you remember for a long time, and we look forward to doing it again soon.

August 8, 2009 - ANOTHER 50 POUNDER!!

Big Boy II headed off to the Southwest Corner, starting the day at 6:00 AM, with Bill Thurman and friends on board.  Seas were only 1 to 2 feet, and winds 5 to 10 MPH.  Around 10:00 AM one of the trolling rods hit the gunnel, and the fight was on.  A monster 50 pound Striper was finally hauled over the side of the boat, measuring in at approximately 48".  Thanks to Bill and friends for a great day.

August 17, 2009

Captain Duane Sousa, Jr. and his good friends, Gary Brierre, Jay Mahoney, Kyle Birkenfeld, Mike Comerford, and Mike Jr. left the dock at 4:00 AM and headed offshore looking for Tuna and Shark.  It was a day on the water that will be remembered for a long time.  We arrived at the Dump 2 hours later - approximately 50 miles out, and all the heavy artillary went into the water.  As soon as the lines hit the water we had 6 knockdowns, and the commotion didn't stop until we were ready to head back to the dock.  We put four Yellowfin Tuna in the boat, as well as False Albacore and Green Bonita.  The water was beautiful - "like a bottle", warm and sunny, with very little wind.

We headed back around 3:00 PM, and by 6:00, once the boat was tied up and getting washed down by a tired by happy crew, were eating Sushi, and getting ready for Tuna steaks on the grill.

Many thanks to Gary, Kyle, JayBird, Mike and Mike for all their hard work this summer, their loyalty and most of all their friendship.......see all you guys in Florida soon!!!

Captain W. Duane Sousa, Jr.

August 31, 2009

Jeremy Rogers traveled from Southwest Florida to fish with Big Boy Charters on Monday August 31, 2009.  We headed out to the Southwest Corner of Block Island to show Jeremy the Rhode Island way of fishing.  Weather was great - sunny with small seas and very little wind and our agenda was Stipers, Blues, and then some bottom fishing.  It was a multi-species trip - landing some good size keeper Stripers, some awesome Black Sea Bass and a really nice Green Bonita.  Jeremy enjoyed our Rhode Island waters and adapted well to our way of fishing really quickly - we look forward to seeing him again soon!

Captain W. Duane Sousa, Jr.

September 5, 2009

Warren Coachman and friends boarded Big Boy II for a half day trip at 6:00 AM and headed off the dock looking for Stripers and Blues.  Seas were calm, between 2 and 3 feet, with only 5 to 10 knot winds.  The fish were everywhere, and we met our Striper limit by 10:00 AM, along with some big Blues.  We all had a great time - Warren fishes with us every summer - and we look forward to doing it again soon!!

June 24th - 26th, 2008

June 24th through June 26th, 2008 found Big Boy Sport Fishing Charters filming with Dan Gapen, Sr., and "Bobber Anne" from Gapen Industries along with their crew. The movie segment was focused on Striper and Blues fishing in Block Island Sound. The shoot was a successful one, bringing Stripers and Blues to the cockpit in large numbers. The weather cooperated for most of the shoot, with some fog and chop out in Block Island Sound. First mate, Mike Cummerford, helped both Dan Gapen, Sr. and Bobber Anne drag multiple Blues to the boat, big keeper Stripers, and finally wrapped up the shoot with some Flounder fishing. A good time was had by all, and the movie will air sometime in mid-February.

July 26, 2008

Big Boy II left the dock at 6:00 AM and headed 30 miles south of Block Island to the our favorite shark grounds. When we arrived, we found the water temperature ideal for sharks. Also, we found our deep holes. The chum buckets were set up hanging over the side scenting the waters while we set up the fishing rods. We were fishing with 130 Penn Internationals, 300 pound test mono looking for the "Big Boy". An hour and a half into fishing we had our first Mako show up in the slick. We threw bait at him, but he just wasn't interested; he was on a mission going somewhere. Then it happened. Out of no where all hell broke loose. One of the 130s was screaming - we had a fish on. Not knowing what we had, we played with him for an hour. After jumping several times - 15 to 20 feet out of the water, we finally got him to the boat. By this time, the angler was totally exhausted. We had a big one. He was approximately 100 pounds. What a great day fishing!

August 16, 2008

On August 16, 2008 Big Boy II left the dock with one of our loyal customers - Louie, and his friends. Louie fishes with Big Boy Sport Fishing Charters five or six times a season, looking for anything from Bass and Blues, Flounder to Shark and Tuna. This day we were on a mission to bring back Tuna. Tuna fishing is risky business -- you have a fifty/fifty shot of even finding them, but when you do, it's "lock and load".

We headed 20 miles offshore to the Mud Hole. We had one rod go off early then nothing. We trolled the same area, back and forth, zig-zagging. Birds were working the water and we knew the Tuna were there, but we just couldn't get them to bite. Then it was like somebody threw a light switch. We had all 8 rods go off at the same time - FISH ON!! They only seemed to like one color - green. That was the magic color for the day. We are limited by Federal Regulations to keep one Schoolie, two mediums, and one Giant per day. We came back to the dock with one Schoolie, and two mediums.

What a great day. We just happened to be at the right place at the right time - that's what we call fishing.

August 30, 2008

After sharking all day Saturday August 30, 2008, we came back to the dock, ready to steak our catch, and clean the boat. The Catain and crew were tired and ready to call it a day. While getting our customers ready for their trip home, a couple walked down SS Dock and stopped at the cockpit of Big Boy II inquiring about a spur of the moment Cod trip for the next day. They were visiting from New Jersey, and hadn't made prior arrangements with any of the Charter Captains to charter a boat. Captain Sousa let the gentleman know that the Cod were just not biting that time of year, and if he took Bruce, the New Jersey native, out for a day of Cod fishing, he would just be taking him for a boat ride. This kind of honesty is what has made Big Boy Sport Fishing Charters the honest success that it is, but as Bruce and his wife thanked Captain Sousa and started to walk away, a strange thing happened. Bruce turned around after not getting 10 feet back up the dock, and asked Captain Sousa what else was biting in Rhode Island Sound, and if he could fit him in for a half day trip.

Arrangements were made, and Bruce showed up at the boat the next morning at 6:00. We left the dock before the sun came up, and headed out to Block Island Sound. This day, unlike so many other days before, became one of our most memorable ones. We helped Bruce bring the ever famous Rhode Island "Door Mats", Flounder, to the back of the boat, and added to that catch Black Sea Bass, and Scup, to mention just a few of the species we fished up. It was a day just like any other one, but we had stood by our reputation, were honest, and put the customer's expectations first, and the money quotient second. Bruce left us that day seemingly happy, and Big Boy Sport Fishing was proud that it had made another angler happy.

Bruce and his family came back several times thereafter, fishing Block Island Sound for giant stripers and blue fish with his sons. When one of his boys pulled up the biggest fish he ever caught, one of the crew was watching Bruce's face, and realized when the father told the Captain that "this was what being a father was all about", that we had done our job, and had grabbed a little bit of happiness that the father himself felt. When they returned again to fish with us, and had packed a lunch to feed Kings for the Captain and the crew, we knew that we had done our job, and made a friend.

Bruce and his crew will be following Big Boy Sport Fishing Charters to Southwest Florida in March looking for Grouper, Sheeps Head or early Tarpon. Whatever we catch, the best catch will be the friends we made.

Our thanks to our many loyal customers who make our business a success, and a reason to get up and go to "work" every day that we pull the boat off the dock.

 Captain William Duane Sousa, Jr.
